AMAZON sends business to the cloud with AWS
More and more Danish companies are choosing AWS (Amazon Web Services). AWS is a highly secure and reliable platform with a range of cloud services for business IT resources. This means that everything from raw computing power to operating software and data storage may be moved to cloud services. This is both effective and entails major economic savings.
Maybe you already use the cloud – or cloud services personally every day? You most likely do, as iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive are all cloud services.
As an example, a popular service is to store photos from your smartphone online. It is a repository that allows you to save physical space on your device and is provided by the manufacturer when you purchase your smartphone. At the same time, you always have access to back-up all your photos from your smartphone, tablet and computer.
If your smartphone is stolen or broken, your setup, apps and photos are all available on your new smartphone almost immediately.
Companies too can derive big benefits from the same functionalities for their entire IT infrastructure, corporate data, or set-up and operation of each computer. This is where Amazon Web Services, AWS enters the room.
AWS is in fact a huge platform of cloud-based web services that allows the company to move IT resources such as databases, computing power, hardware drives, and software applications into the cloud.
It is very smart, efficient and brings great financial savings.
Traditionally, companies with critical IT operations have always had their own data and server centres to operate their entire IT infrastructure. This way, companies were assured that the IT infrastructure always worked. Now the market for cloud solutions is seriously rumbling – and there’s a good reason for that.
Fact: The point of AWS is that your company does not need to invest in advance to get started with the new IT infrastructure. This is simply in operation instantly – and ready all the time.
When a company has a server centre, it must be switched on and in operation 24/7/365. Data back-up is crucial, and there is of course the possibility that one or more servers may collapse.
The larger the company and the more the company and the employees are depending on IT systems, the more expensive these solutions will be in daily operation when it comes to service, maintenance, upgrades and not least, continuous power consumption.
Therefore, the alternative to your own server centre today is that the entire IT infrastructure, applications for services and computing power are moved to a cloud-based service. In other words, the company’s data centre moves to the cloud, such as an AWS solution.
Among the most significant benefits of using cloud-based IT infrastructure at AWS, is the prospect of achieving major financial savings. The simple explanation is that the company only needs to pay for the capacity that is needed. That is, the data being retrieved from and moved to the AWS solution.
Another notable advantage is that AWS can always be upscaled with additional server capacity – or, for that matter, downscaled – in a matter of minutes. This gives the company new opportunities for fast and efficient flexibility, such as expanding and testing new applications on the company’s IT infrastructure. It is not necessary to make large investments in new hardware.
Fact: With traditional data and server centres, scaling capacity can take weeks or even months before newly purchased hardware is received, installed, tested, and ready to use. With AWS this is done with a few clicks of the mouse!
For start-ups, small and medium-sized companies considering using AWS as an alternative to hosting one or more servers at a traditional server centre, the advantage is that the starting costs are extremely low. And the same applies for the cost of upscaling when your business grows, and the need gets bigger.
When we compare the operating costs of a traditional data centre, such as maintenance, replacements, upgrades, support and power consumption, AWS will simply be a considerably cheaper solution.
Building with Bricks
The simplest way to explain the functionality of AWS is to think of it as a set of building blocks, where the user can quickly assemble and move the bricks around. AWS illustrates this on YouTube here.
To these building blocks, you can attach a wide range of services that will be tailored to the specific needs of your company. It is also important to point out that the company will only be billed for the building blocks being used – another way AWS is adapted to individual needs.
Fact: The simplest way to explain how AWS works is to think of it as a set of building blocks, where the user can quickly assemble and move around the bricks.
This saves the company the future costs of IT infrastructure it won’t use, allowing it to focus instead on the development and scaling of the business itself.
Since AWS is instantly scalable, it opens new opportunities to launch new services, products and campaigns with a very short notice.
As with all IT solutions, the company’s IT staff may also need support for the AWS solution. Overall, the response time from the call has been placed til the query is resolved, is divided into categories depending on how business-critical it is.
Fact: The clear reason why AWS dominates the cloud market, and is today the undisputedly largest global provider of cloud solutions for business, is that Amazon was among the first to spot opportunities in cloud technology.
Many choose to use AWS’s own support centre, who always has hundreds of supporters ready to help.
In addition, some local AWS partners have chosen to offer their customers locally based support. Of course, choosing local support gives users an advantage as they can get more dedicated support from AWS experts who already know the IT infrastructure they need to support.
Why choose AWS as the primary cloud solution when today’s market offers such a wide range of different cloud platforms, service providers and solutions?
Well – it is no different than with any other technological service. If you need to choose a solution, you will ultimately have to assess which solution fits your needs the best.
For example, when choosing a cloud solution provider, it is important to focus on how well the technology works. How quickly can the technology provider innovate and develop new products, solutions and services? And can the supplier keep themselves constantly informed of user needs and adapt all services accordingly.
Fact: When we compare the operating costs of a traditional data centre with e.g. maintenance, replacements, upgrades, support and power consumption, AWS will simply be a considerably cheaper solution.
Among the first
And that is precisely where AWS enters the room, which has been documented several times including in The annual report of Gartner, which talks about Cloud Computing.
Amazon was in fact among the very first to see the enormous possibilities of developing scalable web services. Therefore, it is no coincidence that Amazon Web Services today dominates the world on all fronts of cloud computing – in terms of operation, innovation and the further development of professional cloud for business.
The solutions from Amazon Web Services are developed by developers for developers. Therefore, AWS is always among the first to offer new and ground-breaking features.
The fact remains that they are far ahead of their closest competitor in the cloud market. In recent years, AWS has increased its turnover in the region by 50 percent – a year – in a cloud market that all experts believe will only increase in the coming years, including in Denmark.
